If you love to grill and smoke but don’t have room for 2 products and are on a budget, your only alternative is to get a device that can do both. Camp Chef is the go-to brand for outdoor enthusiasts because they have done a great job of positioning themselves as a reliable manufacturer of outdoor grilling products. Most of these products are highly personalized for their target audience, and the Camp Chef SmokePro DLX pellet grill is no different.
It is budget-friendly and has multiple features that are unavailable in other pellet smokers lack and can cook anything from lightly smoked salmon to dry chicken drumsticks. We couldn’t wait to do the Camp Chef SmokePro DLX review because we’d heard great things about it. Can this device take care of all your outdoor cooking needs? Keep reading to find out!
We have always loved charcoal grills great because they give the food an intense smoky flavor. There’s just one challenge; it takes an eternity for the charcoal to reach the preferred temperature, and we don’t have the patience to wait for that long. One of the Camp Chef SmokePro DLX grills features that we loved is the ability to combine the swiftness of propane grilling with the great flavors of a smoky fire. It’s no surprise that this device made it on our favorite pellet smokers list.
Our first impression of the Camp Chef SmokePro DLX looked like a standard barbeque that’s a bit big, but don’t let this fool you. There’s nothing standard about this pellet smoker. It comes disassembled, as is common with most standalone pellet smokers that are large.
This pellet smoker also came with a porcelain-coated warming rack, porcelain-coated cooking grate, grease catch bucket, drip tray, temperature probe, ash trap, and a heat diffuser. It’s versatile enough to smoke, bake and grill.
At first, the assembly process seemed intimidating, but we quickly realized that it was fairly easy. The box came with tools and an instruction manual, and we were done in no time.
The SmokePro DLX is very impressive, and it has a lot of great reviews. We especially loved the advanced control unit that enhanced the smoking precision. Traditionally, most smokers tend to fluctuate up to 60 degrees above or below the required temperature, but this pellet smoker stayed within a 10-degree margin, which is pretty impressive.
While these fluctuations don’t matter much when you’re dealing with meats such as pulled pork, it’s very impactful on delicate meats such as salmon.
Overall, it’s a great bang for your buck.
When you’re buying a smoker, you want to go for one that has enough space for you to grill enough meat. The SmokePro DLX has a direct heat grilling space of about 429 square inches and an additional warming rack that is 141 square inches. In total, you’ll have a whopping 570 square inches of grilling areas, which is more than enough to grill meat for the entire family. Based on industry standards, the recommended size per person is 72 square inches, so you should be able to cook for 8 people with this smoker.
The Camp Chef SmokePro DLX is fueled by smoke pellets. They are made from compressed sawdust and are placed in the hopper, which can carry up to 18 pounds of pellets. This ensures that you use the grill around 3-4 times before refilling the hopper, but it’s advisable that you check it in-between times to ensure the pellets haven’t become wet. Damp pellets can clog your grill and are sometimes a fire hazard.
We loved the way the pellets added the much-prized smoky flavor to our meats and that the cooking process was mostly hands-free.
The SmokePro DLX is well-thought-out, and the exterior is sturdy and robust. It has been built with durable metals and has a beautiful paint finish that makes it stand out. We especially loved the subtle glossy finish of the hopper lid, and the grill lid, which was refreshing compared to the all-too-common matte finish.
The hopper lid has a magnetic latch that prevents it from moving around when you move the grill. This is a clear indication that the company pays attention to the mild annoyances most outdoor enthusiasts face.
This pellet smoker comes with non-stick porcelain cooking grates that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also easy to clean. The upper smoking rack, however, doesn’t come with this material.
One of the aspects that we appreciate in a smoker is the availability of extra space, as the SmokePro DLX comes with a side shelf and a flat lid on the hopper.
The Camp Chef SmokePro DLX is very easy to use and has the cutting edge that all pellet grills have: a quick heating time. It has a temperature range of 160 to 500°F and is highly convenient because it does most of the work for you. All you have to do is continually feed it with pellets, and the rest of the experience is mainly hands-free. This pellet smoker also has a specific temperature system that allows you to set the exact amount of heat you want on the grill.
You should, however, note that the temperature range for this smoke pallet is mainly great for foods that require low heat to cook and smoking meats. If you’re looking for a smoker that can sear your meats or caramelize your vegetables, then you might want to pursue other alternatives.
One of the major downsides of pellet smokers is the ash that accumulates at the bottom, making clean-ups a nightmare. Camp Chef has, however, designed an Ash Cleanout system that completely solves this problem.
This is a small metal sheet beneath the fire pit that slides out of the way to let the ash into a metal cup below it. Even though this system doesn’t catch all the ash, it gets a significant amount of it, easing the clean-up process. This pellet smoker also has a pellet dump that allows you to get rid of the excess pellets.
In addition to an exhaust vent that is common in most pellet smokers, the Camp Chef SmokePro DLX also has a protective cap that prevents rain and snow from getting into the grill’s interior. This significantly reduces the risk of water damage.
Perhaps one of the most underrated safety features of this pellet smoker is the easy access fuse that’s located on the front panel. There’s always the risk of the fuse blowing, and the accessibility of this feature will come in handy then.
This pellet grill is fairly heavy and weighs 140 pounds, so you may experience difficulty maneuvering it. The frame, however, has 2 sturdy wheels which do most of the heavy lifting for you.
The Camp Chef SmokePro DLX has been constructed with high-quality powder-coated steel and will serve you for a long time to come. It has been built to withstand years of regular use, and it doesn’t disappoint. Its grilling grates have an easy clean feature, it has reliable shelving, the wheels are tough, and it has an impressive grease management system. To enhance the durability of your smoker, we recommend that you always keep it clean.
This pellet smoker comes with a 3-year warranty on all parts. It’s, however, important to note that the warranty doesn’t cover paint or any damage resulting from neglect, abuse, modifications, accidents, and misuse of the grill.
Camp Chef has added a variety of features to this pellet smoker that makes it easy to maintain. For instance, the Ash Cleanout system takes care of the dirtiest aspects of owning a grill; cleaning out the ash. It ensures most of the ash falls to the bottom and is in a collection cup ready for disposal.
Camp Chef recommends that you give your pellet smoker a deep clean after every 50 hours of regular use. Make sure you scrape out any build-up on the grill and vacuum the loose debris. You should then use warm, soapy water on the removable parts & the interior, rinse them off, and let the smoker dry before using it.
The Camp Chef SmokePro DLX comes in 3 main colors for you to choose from; black, stainless, and bronze. We went for the black pellet smoker mainly because we loved the beautiful finish. Balck also tends to look elegant, especially in an outdoor setting.
