Smoked Baked Beans - Recipe

The below ideal smoked baked beans recipe is a fantastic base recipe that you can master, and adjust to your taste.

Equipment

  • Cast iron pan

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cans baked beans 2x28 oz
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 6 strips bacon
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 1 jalapeño or green bell pepper finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup mustard
  • 1 tbsp minced garlic
  • 1/4 Salt and pepper

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your smoker to 250F with mild wood
  • Preheat your cast iron pan on the stove top heating up your oil well before adding the bacon and cooking it through without crisping it up
  • Blot the bacon on kitchen towel and leave your pan hot 
  • In the oil and bacon fat cook up your green pepper or jalapeño, onion and garlic until soft, but not browned
  • Pour your baked beans, ketchup, mustard, and sugar into the pan, stir, then place your bacon on top
  • Place the pan in the smoker (as per the model instructions) and allow it to cook for three hours, or until the dish has thickened up nicely
  • Season the dish before serving, avoiding adding salt before this point as the salt of a dish increases as it cooks
